Everyone knows that there is something deeper than behavior that matters a lot. Coworkers, employees, parents, children, clients—we all know this. Some call it motivation, others call it attitude. For some it is presence, for others, authenticity.

Everyone knows that when this deeper thing, whatever it is, is off in some way—when one's attitude is poor, for example, or when one is not being authentic with others—this deep deficiency undercuts the effectiveness of everything that we do. Our teenagers won't listen to us even when our advice is good, for example, and our coworkers resist our efforts even when we think we are trying to help! In such cases, our influence seems to amount to nothing. So this deeper matter—whatever it is—matters. It matters to us, and it matters to those with whom we interact. It matters a lot.

The trouble is, as important as this deeper thing is, most people lack clarity about what it is, and how to change it even in ourselves, much less in others.

This introduction to the work of The Arbinger Institute introduces a language that illuminates this deeper level of human experience. Fully understood, this language allows us to think as precisely about (and change) the deeper matters as our everyday language equips us to think about (and change) outward behavior. Such deep change changes everything—attitude, influence, relationships, life.

And it all starts by understanding a single, most important, choice.

Arbinger Institute

The idea and diagram introduced in this presentation come from a extensive body of work that solves what is known as the problem of “self-deception”— which, simply stated, is the problem of not knowing, and resisting the possibility, that one has a problem. Because self-deception is deeper than a behavioral problem, the discovery to the solution for self-deception revealed a language with which to address the deeper matters—the issues that underlie most of the challenges faced by the people we live and work with, including ourselves. The Arbinger Institute is a worldwide institute that helps organizations, individuals, and communities to solve the problems that have been created by this pervasive problem of self-deception. Arbinger's ideas resulted from a decades-long exploration by an international team of scholars into the issue of self-deception. The new understanding that emerged gradually began to seep into the public consciousness. By the early 1990s, Arbinger was formed to introduce these discoveries to individuals and organizations around the world. Arbinger's first book, Leadership and Self-Deception (2000), quickly became an international bestseller, and this interest resulted in Arbinger opening offices around the world. Arbinger's second international bestseller, The Anatomy of Peace (2006), develops Arbinger's ideas even further and has created, among other things, a global demand for Arbinger's services in conflict areas around the world.

Arbinger offers public courses, consulting and coaching services, and tailored organizational interventions (including train-the-trainer options). Arbinger's clients range from individuals who are seeking help in their lives to many of the largest companies and governmental institutions in the world.
